How to remove temporary program files.

Note: This document relates to deleting .tmp files. Which is not how you clear your browser Internet history or cache.

Windows 98, XP, Vista, 7, and later
If you are running any of these versions of Windows we suggest running the Windows Disk Cleanup utility to quickly delete temporary files and cleanup other portions of your computer.

See the Disk Cleanup definition for additional information and help.

Searching for .tmp files
If you are running Windows 2000, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows ME, Windows XP follow the below instructions to search for and delete any .tmp file found on your computer.

1. Click Start, Find, and click Find Files or folders 
2. In the named box type *.tmp to search for any files ending with tmp. 
3. Verify that Look in section of the search box is pointing to the C: drive and not Document Folders. 
4. Click Find Now 
5. Delete all files that are found 

Once the above section has been done it is also recommend that you ensure that the temporary folder on the hard disk is empty by following the below instructions.

1. Double-click My Computer 
2. Double-click the C: drive Double-click the Temp folder (if present) verify that all files within this folder are deleted. 
3. Close the window and re-open My Computer 
4. Double-click the C: drive 
5. Double-click the Windows folder 
6. Double-click the Temp folder (if present) verify that all files within this folder are deleted. 

If you are running MS-DOS or Windows 3.x follow the below instructions to remove any temporary files currently on the computer.

1. If you are currently in Windows click File and choose the option to Exit Windows

2. Once at the prompt type:
cd\ <press enter>
del *.tmp <press enter>

3. Delete all temporary files found in the root directory of the C drive.

4. Next type:
cd\ <press enter>
cd temp <press enter>

5. If present or in the C:\TEMP> directory type del *.* and delete all files in the temp directory.

6. Once deleted or if the temp folder is not present type:
cd\ <press enter>
cd windows <press enter>
cd temp <press enter>

7. If present or in the C:\Windows\TEMP> directory type del *.* and delete all files in the C: windows temp directory.

Unable to delete .tmp file

If when deleting a .tmp file you get an error it's likely a program is running in the background that's using the file. Close out of all programs, reboot, and try again if you wish to delete the file.

How to Communicate With Other Computers Via Webcam

Having a webcam attached to your PC or laptop allows you to record video and chat to friends visually. Instant messaging programs such as Windows Live Messenger is a free program that comes on the Windows operating system of your computer. This can be used to communicate with friends on other computers, in the form of a one-on-one webcam conversation.

Instructions

1. Double-click on the Windows Live Messenger desktop icon to open the program.

2. Enter the username and password for your account and click on "Sign In."

3. Double-click on the name of the person on your friends list with whom you'd like to have a webcam conversation.

4. Click on "Actions" from the toolbar on the conversation window and move the cursor over "Call."

5. Select "Call Computer" from the section drop-down menu. Wait for your friend to select "Accept." Both webcams will now load up and you will be able to have a conversation.

Top 10 steps in writing an effective e-mail

Below is a listing of our top 10 tips for writing an effective e-mail. Following these suggestions will get you a better response from your e-mails and make e-mailing more enjoyable for you and your recipients.

Keep your e-mails short
Less is more. The shorter you can keep your e-mail while still relaying your message or question the better. At most we suggest no more than three paragraphs of text.

Make the subject line clear and easy to read
The subject of the e-mail should contain enough information to let the recipient know what the e-mail is about.

Make the e-mail personal
Always include the name or alias of the e-mail recipient. If you want the e-mail to be even more personal include your real name in the e-mail as well.

Watch your spelling and grammar
E-mail with spelling and other grammatical errors tells the reader it's not that important. Always spell check, keep the below suggestions in mind, and proof read the e-mail before sending it out.
Always use proper punctuation and capitalization.
Never use shorthand or acronyms people don't understand.
Do not WRITE IN ALL CAPS; it gives the impression you're YELLING.

Don't forward jokes and other e-mails
While you may find a joke funny or find an e-mail interesting or disturbing most people don't enjoy getting forwarded e-mails. Never forward e-mails to all your friends and family.

Remember e-mail isn't private
Realize that e-mail is not encrypted and can be forwarded to other people. Never send personal or company confidential data in e-mail.

Reply to e-mails effectively
When replying to e-mails keep the below suggestions in mind.
Try to reply to e-mails as quickly as possible.
Use the "Reply to all" option cautiously. Really make sure if there are multiple recipients in the CC that everyone really needs to see your reply.
Keep the e-mail thread (previous messages) in the body of the message and your response at the top. This helps remind the reader what the e-mail was about.
Do not over use e-mail program options such as "high-priority", "automatic replies", "read receipts", etc.

Keep the CC and BCC to a minimum
When using CC to send to e-mail to multiple recipients try to keep the list to a minimum. Often when someone sees more than four in the list they'll disregard it as not important or think one of the other recipients will take care of it.

Also use BCC instead of CC when it's not important for the e-mail recipients to see whom the e-mail was sent to and to help keep everyone's e-mail addresses private.

Use plaintext instead of HTML
Always send your e-mails as plaintext. It may not be as pretty but it does allow the e-mail to be read easier and is often less distracting.

Use a clean signature
Signatures can be an effective method of displaying your contact information at the bottom of e-mails. However, follow e-mail signature etiquette when creating your own signature.

What Is Necessary for Wireless Internet?

You can access the Internet almost anywhere, whether you wish to check your e-mail at a beach-side café in rural Vietnam or or stream a video on a Greyhound Bus careening across Ontario. You just need a device with wireless networking capabilities, like a laptop computer or an iPod Touch, and a network within range.







Wireless Devices 

You need a device with wireless capabilities to connect to the Internet. These include tablet PCs like the Motorola Xoom and gaming consoles like the Sony PlayStation 3. Check your device's manual to make sure your device has a wireless network card. Most manufacturers configure their wireless devices to automatically detect and connect to a wireless network whenever one is in range. 

Wireless Cards in Computers
It's nearly impossible to find a new laptop computer for sale without a wireless card, but if your laptop dates from before the mid 2000s you can determine if it has the needed hardware easily through Windows. Click "Start" and click "Control Panel." In Windows Vista and Windows 7, click "Hardware and Sound" and then "Device Manager." In Windows XP, you can click "Device Manager" directly in the Control Panel. Scroll through the list of devices to "Network Adapter" and expand the group to see a list of devices. A device with a "b," "g" or "n" beside it is a wireless network adapter. If one is present, you can use your computer to connect to wireless networks.

Home Networks
A wireless device is half of the basic equation for using wireless Internet; you still need an Internet connection or network. In your home, this can be a wireless high-speed modem or a wireless router connected to a high-speed modem. There are a few different configurations for a wireless home network, but connecting to it is always the same. When your laptop or device is in range, you'll be able to see the network listed. Windows systems have a wireless connectivity icon in the system tray, beside the clock. On XP, the wireless icon looks like a little satellite; in Windows Vista and Windows 7, it's a series of bars. Click the icon to see your home wireless network. If you have set a password, you'll be asked to enter it.

Networks in the Wider World
You'll find wireless networks in airport, hotel lobbies, on buses in and between some cities, on trains, in coffee shops and -- sometimes -- on the beach. Your connectivity depends on the strength of your network adapter and the strength of the network signal. When your device detects a network, try to connect to it. Some networks are password protected and you won't be able to access them, but most public networks are open and don't require a password.

Connect PC to HDMI TV

There are now many ways to enjoy your favorite movies and television shows over a broadband Internet connection on your computer for a small amount of money, or even for free. Unfortunately, watching such media in the confines of your home office does not always make for the most enjoyable experience. If you would like to escape the office, however, and enjoy your entertainment on the big screen in the living room, you can connect a PC to an HDMI TV.

     Turn your computer off, and turn it around to view the rear of the unit. Find the cable that comes from the computer's monitor, and follow it to the back of the PC. The cable will be plugged into the output of the video card, which will be either a 15-pin VGA port or a 29-pin DVI port. If you are fortunate, there will be a second port directly next to it, of either the DVI or VGA variety. On the newest machines, you may even find a regular HDMI port on the card.

     Choose the connection for video output. If your computer has an HDMI port, you can simply connect an HDMI cord of the correct length between the computer and the TV. Otherwise, you will need to make a few decisions. If your computer has only a single video output and it will not be used solely with the television, you may want to invest in a new video card. Purchase one with either a DVI or an HDMI output, and install it in an available slot, according the instructions included with it. If you intend to use the VGA output on a single-output or dual-output card to drive the HDMI display, then a special device will be needed to convert between the formats. The price of the converter is actually about the same price as an entry-level video card that will be easier to use with your TV. In that case, it may be a wise idea to upgrade the card in order to obtain a DVI or HDMI port. However, if your chosen output port is DVI, an inexpensive DVI to HDMI cable can convert your computer's output into the proper HDMI input for your TV.
   • 3
     Connect the HDMI cable from your television to your computer. Install the correct adapter or converter for your computer, if necessary. Unless your computer has HDMI output, cords will also need to be connected from the sound card output to the HDMI video cable or adapter, because HDMI carries both video and audio signals.

     Boot your PC, and configure the new display by selecting "Control Panel" from the "Start" Menu. Double-click the "Display" icon and click the "Settings" tab. The manual for your HDMI TV will list the screen resolutions it supports, along with the refresh rates. Configure the resolution in the "Settings" tab, and then click the "Advanced" button to set the refresh rate. If you are using the HDMI TV as the second monitor, you will also have to configure how it is used by Windows, according to the instructions pertaining to your video card. Most cards offer a "Clone" or "Mirror" mode, where both screens display the same content. Alternately, the "Extended Desktop" mode will allow each monitor to operate independently.

Access Netgear Wireless Router Settings

Netgear wireless router settings must be changed using the router's web-based interface. Any computer on the network can be used to access it. From the Settings menu, options such as "Encryption," "Network setup details" and "Passwords" can be customized.

1: Open any web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. In the address bar, enter "192.168.0.1" (without the quotes) and press the enter key. This will bring up the login prompt for most Netgear wireless routers. If that doesn't work, try "www.routerlogin.net", "192.168.0.5", or "10.1.10.1" until the login window appears.

2 : Enter the username "admin" (again, without the quotes), and the password "password" in the appropriate fields, then click OK to login. If that password fails, try "1234," "Password" (with a capital "P"), or "admin" until you are greeted with the settings screen.

3 : Make any required changes to the settings. Under security, it is possible to specify a new username and password for added security. Once you are done, close the window, and the system will automatically log you out.

The First Thing to Do When You Get a Computer Virus

If your computer is infected with a virus, it can cost you time and money.

Viruses are prevalent on the Web. As fast as software comes out to protect computers, new viruses appear on the Web to work around it. Unfortunately there is no way to protect your computer fully from infiltration. Everyone needs to be aware of what steps to take if a virus infects the computer.

Relax
Take a deep breath and relax. Viruses count on you to panic. Take a step back from the computer and do not touch any keys for a moment.

Turn Off Unit
Shut down the computer. Do not use the mouse or keyboard to shut down. Hold down the power button on the computer until it turns off.

Safe Mode
Turn the computer back on and immediately start to press and release the "F8" key repeatedly. The "Advanced Boot Options" menu will appear on the screen. Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to highlight "Safe Mode With Networking." Hit the "Enter" key.

Run Scan
Log into Windows normally. The icons will appear larger than normal. Run a virus scan on the computer using pre-installed software. Use a second virus scanner such as Kaspersky, Malwarebytes or Super AntiSpyware if your primary software does not locate the virus.

How to Find My Facebook ID

Facebook is website created to connect people and allow them to share information, interests, events and photos. There are many features on Facebook that allow for privacy and security. When creating a Facebook account, the system automatically assigns the user an identification number, known as the Facebook ID. In an update done in the spring of 2009, a user's Facebook ID number was replaced with a "vanity" user name of the Facebook member's choice. Finding the former Facebook ID number is still possible.

Finding Your Former Facebook ID

1. Go to "Facebook.com" and enter your email address and password to log in to your account

2. Click on the word "Profile" that can be found at the top left of the page. This will bring you to your personal profile page. Several tabs including "Wall," "Photos," "Info" and "Boxes" appear under your name.

3. Click on the tab "Photos" just below your name. Your photo albums will be visible once the page loads.

4. Click any one of the photos in your album. Once the photo loads move your mouse to the URL bar in your browser. This is where you would normally type in a web address.

5. Move the cursor to the end of the URL, if needed. Some URLs are short enough that the number will be visible immediately. Look for a series of numbers. There may be more than one series of numbers in the URL. Find the set that follows "id=". This is your Facebook ID.

Converting a file from YouTube to an MP3 file is not as difficult as some might think. YouTube files are called flv files. Because they are audio and video files, to save them as mp3 files, the video must be stripped and the audio must be saved. Fortunately, there is a free program online that will do this for you.

1. Go to YouTube.com and find the file that you want to convert. The file can be anything from a music video to a lecture in a college classroom. The only prerequisite is that there must be audio. When you have found the right video, click on the address bar and select "Ctrl+C" to copy the URL address.

2. Type into your browser the site, http://www.flv2mp3.com Wait for the page to load. At the top of the page, make sure the button next to the words "By URL" are selected.

3. Paste the website address that you copied in step 1 into the text box on the page. Paste the text by either selecting "Ctrl+V" or by right-clicking and choosing "Paste" from the menu that appears. Click "OK" at the bottom of the page next to "I Accept the Terms."

4. Be patient as the next page opens and begins to load. A status bar at the top of the page will show the status of the file being downloaded. Once the status bar says "Status Complete," click on the "Convert" button on the bottom of the page.

5. Wait for a window to open that asks you what you want to do with the downloaded file. In this window, click the circle next to "Open File." Then click on the drop box in the window and select iTunes from the list. Click "OK." The iTunes program will open, and the song will begin to play.
