Fun Things That Your Computer Can Do

Computers are fascinating machines with a wide range of uses ranging from functional to frivolous. Entertainment is a common use of a computer in modern society. You may see several people wiling away their spare time with their computers without ever running out of new and interesting ways to stave off boredom.

Access the Internet
The Internet has a host of interesting things you can do. You can chat with friends over the Internet, read funny jokes and play games. You can also connect with strangers who share your views on certain topics through forums and chat rooms. Online access can also provide you with the tools to cook a dish or build something. The Internet can be a dangerous place, though, so always browse with caution and never provide a stranger with your personal information.
Music
Your computer has the ability to play music, which can be both fun and relaxing. With the right speakers and sound card, your computer can produce a high definition sound that works well for parties or just easy listening by yourself. You can pay for individual songs and store them virtually on your computer or you can play music from one of your favorite CDs. You you can use Windows Media Player to listen to your personal music collection.

Videos
A DVD player disc drive makes it possible to watch some of your favorite DVD movies on your computer. Slide the disk into your drive and let it play using a media reader application such as Windows Media Player. You can easily fast forward or rewind your movie in most media playing applications. You also can watch movies and television shows online if your Internet connection is fast enough.
Games
Most computers come with a few offline games that you can play at your leisure, but it is always possible to install more games. You can install digital versions of real world games such as chess or poker or various sports, and explore the wide range of other games made for the computer, possibly including a computer version of your favorite console games. Some companies include exclusive content only available in the computer version of their games. You can choose to play these games using your keyboard and mouse, or purchase a gaming controller designed for your computer.

Fun Stuff to Do With Your Computer

Computers are a bucket of fun. There is so much you can do on them---from processing your digital photos to planning a family vacation. The computer has so many uses and not all of them involve the Internet. Here are some fun things to do on your computer when you are bored with just surfing the world wide web.

Desktop Publishing---Cards, Banners, Publications
One fun activity to do on your computer is desktop publishing---designing and printing cards, letterhead, banners, publications and other creative documents. Use Microsoft Publisher or Adobe InDesign to create your designs. If you don't have a design program on your system, visit Scribus.net at http://www.scribus.net and download Scribus, a free desktop publishing program for Windows and Mac platforms. Scribus has a user-friendly interface and is flexible enough for beginners and advance designers.

Media Center
Another fun thing to do on your computer is to turn your system into a "media center" for watching movies and playing music. Connect the computer to a large monitor like your television and watch hours of YouTube videos, DVD movies or play your favorite tunes from iTunes or Realplayer. If you have a large collection of music, organize the songs on to playlists for hours of playback. At your next party, use your "media center" as the DJ instead of someone playing CDs manually.

Digital Learning Center
Forget about going to the library to do research or to pick out a book. Turn your computer into a virtual digital learning center. With a Internet connection, you can access hundreds of digital e-books and information on any topic. Visit Net-Books.com at http://www.net-ebooks.com to download a free e-book reader and access links to free e-books. Other research resources are on available on CD-ROM for you to read on your computer without having a Internet connection.

Digital Photo Lab
Digital photography processing is another fun thing to do on your computer. You don't have to use a photo lab to make multiple copies of your favorite photographs. With a printer and some photo-editing software, you can crop, resize, color-correct and print photos right at home. Then sign up for one of many online photo storage services, such as Flickr at http://www.flickr.com, to display your photos on the Internet. Most services are free and come with easy to use photo-editing software if your system doesn't have a program installed.

Top 10 steps in writing an effective e-mail

Below is a listing of our top 10 tips for writing an effective e-mail. Following these suggestions will get you a better response from your e-mails and make e-mailing more enjoyable for you and your recipients.

Keep your e-mails short
Less is more. The shorter you can keep your e-mail while still relaying your message or question the better. At most we suggest no more than three paragraphs of text.

Make the subject line clear and easy to read
The subject of the e-mail should contain enough information to let the recipient know what the e-mail is about.

Make the e-mail personal
Always include the name or alias of the e-mail recipient. If you want the e-mail to be even more personal include your real name in the e-mail as well.

Watch your spelling and grammar
E-mail with spelling and other grammatical errors tells the reader it's not that important. Always spell check, keep the below suggestions in mind, and proof read the e-mail before sending it out.
Always use proper punctuation and capitalization.
Never use shorthand or acronyms people don't understand.
Do not WRITE IN ALL CAPS; it gives the impression you're YELLING.

Don't forward jokes and other e-mails
While you may find a joke funny or find an e-mail interesting or disturbing most people don't enjoy getting forwarded e-mails. Never forward e-mails to all your friends and family.

Remember e-mail isn't private
Realize that e-mail is not encrypted and can be forwarded to other people. Never send personal or company confidential data in e-mail.

Reply to e-mails effectively
When replying to e-mails keep the below suggestions in mind.
Try to reply to e-mails as quickly as possible.
Use the "Reply to all" option cautiously. Really make sure if there are multiple recipients in the CC that everyone really needs to see your reply.
Keep the e-mail thread (previous messages) in the body of the message and your response at the top. This helps remind the reader what the e-mail was about.
Do not over use e-mail program options such as "high-priority", "automatic replies", "read receipts", etc.

Keep the CC and BCC to a minimum
When using CC to send to e-mail to multiple recipients try to keep the list to a minimum. Often when someone sees more than four in the list they'll disregard it as not important or think one of the other recipients will take care of it.

Also use BCC instead of CC when it's not important for the e-mail recipients to see whom the e-mail was sent to and to help keep everyone's e-mail addresses private.

Use plaintext instead of HTML
Always send your e-mails as plaintext. It may not be as pretty but it does allow the e-mail to be read easier and is often less distracting.

Use a clean signature
Signatures can be an effective method of displaying your contact information at the bottom of e-mails. However, follow e-mail signature etiquette when creating your own signature.
